Nuremberg

Today as we traveled on the canal which connects the Danube and Rhine Rivers, we crossed over the Continental Divide. The canal is over 100 miles long and has sixteen locks- so it's all down hill from here!! We visited the city Nurenberg by bus and on foot. Nuremberg was one of Hitler's favorite cities and was 90% destroyed by Allied bombing. We got quite a history lesson on the site where the Nazi's had huge demonstrations in the late '30s as they took over. We stood in front of the stands where, on TV and films, we often see a large swastika on top being blown to bits. In front of the courthouse where the war crimes were tried, we were given a wonderful talk by our local tour guide on how Hitler seduced a nation, what happened during the war, how the war crime trials proceeded, how they feel today and how their laws guard against it from happening again. For me, it was very moving to hear this 30 year old man describe his and their feelings. It's off to the Captain's Gala Dinner............
